Quiz 2: Overview

  • Production Effects: Compressor
  • Delay Effects: Beat Repeat, Chorus, Flanger (Simple Delay, Ping Pong Delay, Auto Pan)
  • Filter Effects: Resonators & Vocoder
  • MIDI Effects: Arpeggiator
  • Distortion Effects: Amp, Overdrive
  • Synthesis/Sampling: Simpler, Operator
  • SFX Effects: Risers & Wobbles in Analog, or Simpler or Operator

Tips

  • Synths: Simpler and Operator – can you identify the sound sources in either a Simpler or Operator instrument AND determine the settings that created the sounds you hear?  That is: oscillators; sample editor; filters; amplifiers; ADSR envelopes – pitch, filter or  amplitude; noise; LFOs for LFO-driven modulation?  Can you explain wavetable synthesis with Simpler or FM synthesis with Operator?
  • Delay Effects: Beat Repeat, Chorus, Flanger – how does an Audio Delay Effect create rhythms, textures and timbres? How would LFOs be used for LFO-driven modulation?
  • Filter Effects: Resonators & Vocoder – how does an Audio Filter Effect create rhythms, textures and timbres? How would LFOs be used for LFO-driven modulation?
  • MIDI Effects: Arpeggiator – how does the Arpeggiator create, extend and/or change MIDI data note data?
  • Distortion Effects: Amp, Overdrive – how does a Distortion Effect change or enhance a timbre?
  • Production Effects: Compressor w/ Sidechaining – what EDM technique does Compressor create?
  • SFX Effects: How are the EDM techniques – risers & wobbles – created in Analog, or Simpler or Operator?

Part I – “Matching Audio Examples with Ableton Live Example Files:”

  1. EDM Technique Matching Component – “Match Those Audio Examples with the Ableton Live EDM Technique Example Files”
  2. Be prepared to correctly match 8 Audio Examples that you listen to ahead of time with the Ableton Live EDM Technique Example Files that you analyze and study ahead of time.
  3. All of the Audio Examples and Ableton Live EDM Technique Example Files are at the Music 295b classesv2 site. Go to the Resources Folder and then look for the “Quiz 2: EDM Techniques Examples” folder.  Prepare ahead of time and take notes.

Part II – “Explain Those EDM Techniques:”

  1. EDM Technique Essay Component – “Explain Those EDM Techniques”
  2. Be prepared to correctly and precisely explain how the Ableton Live EDM Technique Example Files that you analyzed and studied beforehand actually work.  That is, how each Ableton Live EDM Technique Example File created the Audio Example that you matched to it.
  3. Again, all of the Ableton Live EDM Technique Example Files are at the Music 295b classesv2 site. Go to the Resources Folder and then look for the “Quiz 2: EDM Techniques Examples” folder.  Prepare ahead of time and take notes.

Part III – “Extra Credit:”

  1. There are two Extra Credit examples: one on wobble technique and the other on vocoding.
